Personal Internet-Enabled Devices Policy

Purpose

To keep learning safe, focused, and free of distractions, P-TECH High School prohibits the use of personal internet-enabled devices during the school day on school grounds, in compliance with New York State Education Law §2803 and NYCPS Chancellor’s Regulation A-413.

Definitions

  • Internet-enabled electronic device: Any device that can connect to the internet (cell phones, smartphones, smartwatches, laptops, tablets/iPads, portable music/entertainment systems).
  • School day: From entry into the building until the last class ends, including lunch. At P-TECH: 8:04 AM – 3:45 PM.

Core Rule

Students may not use or access personal internet-enabled devices at any time during the school day.
Students may use NYCPS-issued devices for learning as directed by staff.

Central Collection & Storage

Arrival

  • Devices must be powered off before entry.
  • Collection: Lobby, 8:00–10:30 AM.
  • After 10:30 AM: Check in at Room 129.

Distribution

  • End-of-day pickup: Gym Balcony & Room 129, 1:14–3:45 PM.
  • Late arrival/confiscated devices: Pickup from an Assistant Principal in Room 325.
  • Approved early dismissal: Pickup in Room 129.

Emergency Communications

  • Families → Student: Call 718-221-1593 or email info@ptechnyc.org.
  • Student → Family: Use the school phone in Room 425 or see your guidance counselor.
  • School → Families: Notices sent via Remind and GAMA.

How to Receive Messages (NYCSA & GAMA)

  1. Go to NYCSA Account Setup → “Create Account.”
  2. Enter Student ID (OSIS) and the Account Creation Code.
  3. If you don’t know your code, contact Mr. Smith, Parent Coordinator (csmith@ptechnyc.org, 718-221-1593 ext. 4253).
  4. In “Communication Preferences,” enable GAMA notifications.

Exceptions

  • IEP/504 Plan requires it and no DOE-issued device is suitable.
  • Medical monitoring (e.g., glucose), caregiver responsibilities, language access, or as required by law.
  • Instructional use authorized by principal/designee.

Process: Contact the principal at 718-221-1593. If unavailable, AP designees: Harold Israel, Will Ehrenfeld, Duane Williamson, Brian Lewis. Requests processed in 1–5 school days.

Discipline

Progressive discipline applies. No suspensions solely for cellphone use. Repeated insubordination may lead to suspension with OSYD approval.

  1. Reminder & documentation
  2. Confiscation for the day; parent notified
  3. Dean/AP conference; possible loss of privileges
  4. Behavior contract
  5. Referral; possible suspension

Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Devices

The school is not responsible. File claims with the NYC Comptroller’s Office.

Consultation & Distribution

  • Reviewed with SLT and/or PTA.
  • Distributed annually at the start of school and upon enrollment.
  • Posted on the school website (A-413 Section VI(B)).
